Looking in the mirror and feeling so much healthier is the biggest highlight for me – Mitul Mandanka
As a child, Mr Mitul Mandanka was always the biggest kid in class. In school he had to kneel for annual photos to match his teammates in height. Despite his husky build, he was active throughout his school days, playing sports and other activities. By the passing year he no longer was the tallest, but he was the heaviest as his weight edged up to 132 Kgs.

Mr Mitul was tired of being overweight and later obese. With mounting health issues, including Diabetes Mellitus, Fatty liver, and Dyslipidemia, Mr Mitul made the tough decision to have Bariatric Surgery.
“I had my whole life ahead of me. Something had to change,” says the 35-year-old Mr Mitul.
Until his 20s, he was fit but then his weight really started to be a problem. He was diagnosed with Diabetes. This was the biggest challenge in his early age. Because of unhealthy diet and lack of exercise Mr Mitul also got Dyslipidemia and was just concerned about these health issues, he was diagnosed with Fatty liver as well.
Mr Mitul is a Businessman and always loved it but sitting for a long took its toll.
The real eye-opener came when he wanted to chase his dream – biking.
“I realized, even if I could find a bike that could hold a 132-kilo dude, it would be impossible to keep up. I didn’t feel good. I was always tired, and not sleeping well,” says Mr Mitul.
A visit to his family doctor revealed he was diabetic and had Dyslipidemia. Further testing showed he had Fatty Liver.
“It was a big wake up call. My doctor warned me I’d be on handful pills — and worse — if I didn’t do something,” he says.
In a Life-Changing choice he lost 45 kilos, after having Bariatric Surgery. Knowing family members and friends who’d had success with surgery, Mr Mitul went to a bariatric surgery information session at Zydus Hospital’s GObesity Center.
“I came to know that I had been eating wrong my whole life. I was being lazy and not taking it seriously. I had to get my act together,” says Mr Mitul. “Dr Parag Patel taught me a lot and prepared me well.”
With a renewed commitment, Mr Mitul became more mindful of his diet. And he made exercise part of his daily routine, including working out.
Bariatric Surgeon Dr Parag Patel at GObesity Center performed his surgery in 2018.
Over the next few months, he dropped 45 kgs — getting down to 96 Kgs and a much healthier BMI of 32.8. His diabetes is gone, and he no longer has Dyslipidemia or fatty liver.
Now he follows a healthy low carb/low fat/high protein diet and dreams of running a half marathon and biking across the state.
“Everything is easier now — getting in and out of my car, putting my shoes on, doing things with my friends,” says Mr Mitul. “But looking in the mirror and feeling so much healthier — that’s the biggest highlight for me.”
